I know it’s better to love people and experiences, but y’all… I love Costco. I love the giant TVs on the right when you walk in, and all the things you didn’t know you needed but now you REALLY do helpfully stocked along the wall to the left. I love walking the wide aisles and the ridiculousness of buying gallons of ketchup or olive oil. And the samples – oh, the samples, which at least in Sevilla are back post-pandemic. And also, when you are navigating life in a different country with a different language and culture and everything, it’s nice to have something so… familiar. And Costco cards are good worldwide! So I could flash my current membership card at the entrance and just stroll right in!

I first went to Costco on the bus – a long but easy trip that ended up being a HUGE miscalculation, because I was not thinking, as I was loading my cart, oh, I’m going to have to walk back to the bus stop and then carry this home. Lesson learned!
I returned in November with a car we rented for an extra day for the express purpose of using it to go to Costco because I had heard they had real, American-style pumpkin pie, and Thanksgiving would have felt seriously lacking without it. It turns out they did have the pumpkin pies! They were huge and I got two. And a giant thing of toilet paper. And a huge bottle of multi-vitamins. And Nature Valley granola bars! And seaweed snacks! And a 6-pack of the milk we drink. Also I 3-pack of Ritz crackers and a double package of hummus. And a salted caramel birthday cake for Harrison. Getting that all from the car into the elevator and into our apartment took multiple trips, but it was well worth it.
When you are in a new place and surrounded by the unfamiliar, there is something to be said for a little taste of home – especially if it comes in the form of a little paper cup with a Costco sample in it!
