Today is Election Day in the U.S. It’s not a big, flashy election – that’ll come next year, but it’s important nonetheless with candidates for Mayor, City Council, and School Board on the ballot in my former hometown of Charlotte, NC. I wish more people would pay attention to these elections, as these are the ones that have more impact on our day-to-day lives, with decisions made about infrastructure and development in the city and, more and more about what our children can and cannot read and learn.
I am no longer living in the U.S., but I am still an American citizen, and I hold that the right to vote is a sacred duty that we are obligated to take part in whenever we are given the opportunity. I believe in my country’s ability to live up to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. So when I first heard about VoteFromAbroad.org, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to helping Americans living overseas to get their ballots and vote, I immediately signed up! VoteFromAbroad “provides every US citizen abroad with the information and tools needed to VOTE” and they make it so ridiculously easy that there isn’t any excuse not to do it!
The Federal Voting Assistance Program estimates that there are 3 million voting-eligible Americans living abroad, only 7.8% of whom actually vote. Less than eight percent!! I am now and will continue to be a proud member of that 8%! Vote! Vote! Vote!
